For those with a baby in the house, a good night’s sleep is often a luxury. Nanit, which launched today, thinks it may have just the answer — a camera that uses computer vision and machine learning algorithms that allow parents to better understand how their baby sleeps by tracking sleep patterns, room conditions, and sleep quality.

Unlike other products that require sensors attached to the child, Nanit is an easy-to-install standing device that never touches the crib, keeps wires out of the way, and can be positioned in multiple configurations. It is optimized for night vision and comes with a built-in nightlight and lullaby sound box. For parents at work, who want to check in on their child, real-time updates can be sent right to the their mobile phones with Nanit’s live stream.

The company was founded in 2011 by Assaf Glazer. As a new parent, he became frustrated with how bad existing baby monitors were. Glazer said, “When I had my son almost 5 years ago, I really wanted to understand his behavior, make sure he was safe and healthy, and be the best parent to him that I could be. And if I could get some sleep while accomplishing all of this, even better.”

Glazer used his experience building intelligent cameras to come up with the idea for Nanit. The company now has 15 staffers and to date had raised $6.6 million. At present Nanit can only be purchased online, although down the road, the company plans to have its product in retail stores. Units will begin shipping in September for $349. Customers can pre-order before August 15 and take advantage of the launch sale price of $279.
