Boldr raised $5 million in a pre-Series A, four years after Madi Ablyazov, Toma Paro and Matheus Marotzke founded the London company. Unconventional Ventures led. Ada Ventures, Tetrad Ventures, Davidovs Venture Collective, Roxbury Asset Management, Inclimo Climate Tech Fund, Prosegur, Techstars and S20 Fund joined, along with strategic investors from the North American HVAC industry. A $3.2 million seed closed last year.

The company makes connected heating and cooling hardware and an app that shifts a home’s power draw when the grid is strained. It sells through the contractors who install and service that equipment rather than to homeowners, and has distribution deals with Daikin and Bosch-owned Source 1. Batteries, EV chargers and solar come next, tech.eu reported.

“The next power plant won’t be one building. It will be millions of homes working together,” chief executive Madi Ablyazov told tech.eu. Boldr has not issued a press release on the round.

Virtual power plants have spent a decade trying to make homeowners care about kilowatt hours. Boldr is betting on the guy in the van instead. He has the ladder, the truck roll and the customer’s phone number already.
