L.A. County officials close bars, fitness centers and movie theaters; direct restaurants to take out only

L.A. County officials on Monday directed the closure of all bars, gyms and movie theaters and told restaurants to issue takeout-only to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The directive affects all 88 cities and unincorporated regions of the county, per the Los Angeles Times. The city Los Angeles ordered its own similar guidelines on Sunday. Officials also banned gatherings of more than 50 people, per guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

L.A. County confirmed twenty-five new cases on Monday, bringing the county total to 94 known cases. At least 15 of the total cases are due to community transmission.

“Residents at this point must assume that there may be people who are infected everywhere in the county,” L.A. County Department of Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer, said per the Times.

The closures are slightly more strict than in greater California, where California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday asked, but did not mandate, that bars close and restaurants slash occupancy in half..
