The company is building a new type of nuclear reactor that uses molten salt instead of the light and heavy water that reactors currently use. Molten salt reactors can run at higher temperatures and more efficiently than water-cooled reactors. According to the company, its reactor generates carbon-free electricity at a price that is less expensive than coal — which means that Transatomic Power can replace the coal plants coming offline in the U.S. and serve as an alternative to new coal plants being built internationally.
