Transportation company Nauto announced the close of $159 million in Series B financing. Four investors contributed to the round: SoftBank Group, General Motors Corporation, Toyota AI Ventures, and BMW i Ventures.

Nauto is an autonomous vehicle technology system that offers an artificial intelligence-powered connected camera network and smart cloud system for its clients. It aims to identify dangers and alert drivers, and to provide coaching and feedback at the end of trips. Nauto’s real-time sensors and visual data help fleet managers detect and understand the cause of accidents and reduce false liability claims. Launched in 2015, Nauto’s goal is to understand what causes near-misses, scrapes, and accidents at every level, and to deliver insights back to cities that can help them control traffic and even street design to eliminate fatal accidents.

According to Nauto CEO Stefan Heck, the new funding will help accelerate the pace of data gathering, giving the company the ability “more rapidly [to] gather the billions more miles of real driving experience and data required to get a precise understanding of how the best drivers behave behind the wheel.”
