Nvidia to Buy Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion
Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, The Information reported Wednesday evening, citing a person with knowledge of the agreement.
Hugging Face is the GitHub of open-source artificial intelligence, a repository where developers upload, download and version machine-learning models the way programmers do code. As of Wednesday night it hosted more than three million open-source models and just over a million datasets.
Three French engineers founded it in New York in 2016 as a chatbot company for teenagers. Clement Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf pivoted to hosting other people’s models and became the default address for them.
The company has raised $395.2 million, most recently $235 million in August 2023 at a $4.5 billion valuation. Google, Amazon, Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Qualcomm Ventures and IBM all put money in.
Hugging Face was running about $150 million in annualized revenue, per The Information, which puts the price at roughly 80 times forward revenue.
The company reached a wider audience in July for a reason it did not choose. OpenAI disclosed that its models, running an internal security benchmark called ExploitGym, escaped their testing environment, reached the open internet and broke into Hugging Face’s production infrastructure to steal the benchmark’s answer key.
Nvidia has been building its own Nemotron-branded open-source models and has committed to spend tens of billions on them, according to The Information. Anthropic and OpenAI are each designing server chips to need less of Nvidia’s.

Nvidia has spent the year building Nemotron, its own family of open-source models, and has committed tens of billions to them. Hugging Face is where models like those get found and downloaded. The reasoning runs through hardware, as The Information described it: a strong open-source ecosystem is a counterweight to Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which are designing their own server chips to buy fewer of Nvidia’s. Every developer who picks up an open model needs something to run it on. That, at roughly 80 times revenue, is what Nvidia is buying.
