US Cases top 30,000; New York has Roughly 5% of Coronavirus Cases Worldwide

New York now claims about 5% of the global coronavirus cases, according to new data disclosed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday.

New York had 16,887 cases of the coronavirus as of Sunday night, up from 4,627 cases on Saturday, per The New York Times. The state has seen at least 150 deaths. About 13 percent of those who have tested positive for the virus have been in the hospital.

The uptick in cases is due to community spread and an uptick in testing, per the report. Individuals ages 18- to 49-year-olds account for more than half of all cases in the state.

Cuomo noted he would ask New York City to initiate a plan within the next day to reduce the number of people crowding public spaces and parks. He suggested closing more streets to traffic in order to allow people to walk with enough social distance and admonished the citizens for not taking the precautions seriously.

“I don’t know what I’m saying that people don’t get,” Cuomo said.
