The U.S. Now Leads the World in Confirmed Coronavirus Cases

The United States, as of Thursday, now has the most confirmed coronavirus cases in the world.

The U.S. has at least 81,321 known cases of the disease, more than China or Italy, per The New York Times. The country is the third most populated in the world with 330 million people.

Almost half the population, 160 million American, have been ordered to stay at home. Public institutions such as schools and libraries and public businesses like bars, restaurants and gyms are closed.

“We are the new global epicenter of the disease,” said Dr. Sara Keller, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins Medicine. “Now, all we can do is to slow the transmission as much as possible by hunkering down in our houses while, as a country, we ramp up production of personal protective equipment, materials needed for testing, and ventilators.”
