The U.S. and Canada Agree to Close Border to Nonessential Traffic

The border between the U.S. and Canada will be closed to “nonessential traffic” President Trump said Wednesday to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Trump said on Twitter that the closure will not affect trade, but provided few other specifics. Officials from Canada have not made an official statement.

“We will be, by mutual consent, temporarily closing our Northern Border with Canada to non-essential traffic. Trade will not be affected. Details to follow!” Trump tweeted.

The administration is also looking into the possibility of restrictions on the U.S. southern border with Mexico, per NBC News. Officials are concerned that if the virus moves to Central America, citizens of countries such as Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador will begin to travel to the U.S. to access the already overwhelmed U.S. healthcare system.
