MLB, NHL, NBA, MLS suspend seasons

Major League Baseball suspended spring training and delayed opening day at least two weeks on Thursday as part of the effort to curb the coronavirus spread.

Regular season play was slated to start on March 26, but is now postponed indefinitely, according to The New York Times. League officials will conference with the players union about the next steps.

The league said it “will remain flexible as events warrant, with the hope of resuming normal operations as soon as possible.”

The National Hockey League and Major League Soccer also announced Thursday that they would suspend their seasons, following the lead of the NBA, which cancelled the remainder of its season on Wednesday. The N.H.L. did not state how long the delay would last, stating that the league’s objective was “to resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent.”

The N.C.A.A. men’s and women’s basketball tournaments were also canceled earlier this week after initial plans to attempt to play the games as scheduled without fans in attendance.
