Founded in 2015 by Mike Sheridan, Jason Nazar, and Yadid Ramot, Comparably is a platform that provides job compensation data, employer ratings, and company culture reviews. Users can find not only typical salary levels based on city, job title, and industry, but also employees’ ratings of employers around compensation levels, leadership team, and workplace culture.

Comparably goes a step further than Glassdoor, an existing website that provides salary reports and anonymous employee reviews, by giving job seekers insight into workplace culture, both of specific companies and across career fields. Marketing professionals working in the tech industry, for example, can see what their peers think about their jobs in terms of professional development and office culture. Comparably’s database covers a wide range of topics, from how often employees receive useful feedback to how many times they have been promoted in the previous five years. They can even specify how many meetings they have in a typical day.

What is also unique about Comparably’s company culture reviews is that can be filtered according to demographic characteristics like location, gender, age, and ethnicity. Instead of merely seeing overall feedback, a job seeker can choose to collect only reviews provided by current employees with similar demographic profiles. The demographics-based reviews are, in some cases, quite different from the general ones. To accommodate different demographic groups’ specific concerns about the workspace, Comparably even addresses such sensitive topics as sexual harassment and racial discrimination.

Comparably’s platform clearly benefits professionals who are trying to assess their success relative to their peers, or who are weighing options about which companies to work for. In a bid to challenge jobsite giants like Indeed and LinkedIn, Comparably introduced a function that claims to “have your dream job find you.” Traditionally, job seekers scour through thousands of job listings, which typically provide no information about company culture or compensation level. Using Comparably’s system, however, job seekers can specify what they expect or desire from their next job, and Comparably will suggest companies whose profiles match with those criteria.
Comparably had previously raised $6.5 million Series A financing, led by Crosslink Capital.
